Taiwan Supports Tibetan Rebels (1959)

The 1959 Tibet uprising got support from Taiwan. Anger over the Seventeen Point Agreement and the fear that the 14th Dalia Lama was going to be arrested sparked protests. China annexed Tibet and Tibet rebels emerged to fight the PLA. Chiang Kai-shek realized that support for the rebels in Tibet would undermine the People’s Republic of China. Kai-shek wanted to retake the mainland and depose Mao Zedong. Taiwan used the revolt in Tibet for its own propaganda purposes. What it wanted to present was a CCP losing control. The newsreel criticizes China of communist imperialism, but omits the fact those colonized in Asia were still fighting European powers.
