The Simpsons Series Premiere (1989)

The Simpsons originally appeared in animated shorts on the Tracy Ullman Show in 1987. The characters of Homer, Bart, Marge, and Lisa Simpson were created by Matt Groening. These characters became so popular that it was decided to turn the shorts into its own program in 1989. The show made its debut as a Christmas special on December 17th. The official series came to the FOX network on January 14, 1990. The series was developed by Sam Simon, James L. Brooks, and Matt Groening. Since its debut it has aired 606 episodes and produced one feature film in 2007. The Simpsons hold the record of the longest running American sitcom and the longest American animated program.When it first became a series this was the first time an animated program had been aired on prime time, since The Flintstones.  The show’s humor lampoons American culture, family values, politics, and the state of the human condition. Ever since their premiere The Simpsons have become an important part of popular culture.  The show will certainly be an important part of television history.
