Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru criticizes UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold’s comments about Nikita Khrushchev. He states that he was more so criticizing their form of government rather than the individual. Nehru clearly believes as he puts it “the way things are done” means that nations have a right to choose whatever form of government best suits a particular nation. Nehru was a firm believer in the non-aligned movement with neither advocated a pro-Western or pro-Soviet stance. Nehru wanted pacifism to be part of India’s foreign policy, but this was not successful entirely with Pakistan in regards to Kashmir and China when a border war broke out in 1962. Nehru also reveals in this footage that the UN should be able to expel members who violate certain codes of conduct. He says instead of merely listening to threats of certain nations leaving, there should be a process of removal. This could not have been effective, because the UN may have declined like the League of Nations. There still is an East and West divide in the United Nations to this very day.
